立冬，是二十四節氣之一，每年在11月6-8日之間，斗指乾，即太陽位於黃經225°。立，建始也，表示冬季自此開始。冬是終了的意思，萬物收藏也，意思是說秋季農作物全部收曬完畢，收藏入庫，動物也已藏起來準備冬眠。中國又把立冬作為冬季的開始。
一候水始冰：水面初疑，未至於堅也。
二候地始凍：土氣凝寒，未至於坼。
三候雉入大水為蜃。
人有補冬的習慣，冬令進補，來年打虎，立冬時特重食補，用以補充元氣，抵禦冬天的寒冷。對於農耕社會來說，人們一年來的辛苦勞作，立冬這一天要休息一下，用以犒賞一家人一年來的辛勞。
LìDōng begins when the Sun reaches the celestial longitude of 225° and ends when it reaches the longitude of 240°. It more often refers in particular to the day when the Sun is exactly at the celestial longitude of 225°. In the Gregorian calendar, it usually begins around November 7 and ends around November 22.
Lidong signifies the beginning of winter in East Asian cultures.
The phenomena during this solar term:
水始冰, 'Water begins to freeze' – the initial stages of water bodies freezing over.
地始凍, 'The earth begins to harden'
雉入大水為蜃, 'Pheasants enter the water for clams'
